Dr Peter Molan’s years of research identified the natural antibacterial compound in Mānuka honey as Non-Peroxide Activity. While all honeys contain some level of Hydrogen Peroxide Activity, only Mānuka Honey contained Non-Peroxide Activity. In 2008, Professor Thomas Henle and his team at the University of Dresden, in Germany, discovered the key natural chemical compound being Methylglyoxal (MGO).
With this new research, the active compound MGO was found naturally occurring in the nectar and pollen in the flowers of Mānuka trees. Mānuka is a native New Zealand tree with a short flowering period, making the placement of hives and timing of harvest crucial to harvesting MGO Mānuka Honey.
