MGO Grading

Dr Peter Molan’s years of research identified the natural antibacterial compound in Mānuka honey as Non-Peroxide Activity. While all honeys contain some level of Hydrogen Peroxide Activity, only Mānuka Honey contained Non-Peroxide Activity. In 2008, Professor Thomas Henle and his team at the University of Dresden, in Germany, discovered the key natural chemical compound being Methylglyoxal (MGO).

 

With this new research, the active compound MGO was found naturally occurring in the nectar and pollen in the flowers of Mānuka trees. Mānuka is a native New Zealand tree with a short flowering period, making the placement of hives and timing of harvest crucial to harvesting MGO Mānuka Honey.

 

The famed reputation of Mānuka Honey stems from years of scientific research and clinical trials, proving the antibacterial potency of the Mānuka Honey based on its MGO level. The trials evidenced Mānuka Honey as a highly effective healer for external wounds, ulcers and infected areas (MRSA infections).

 

Our MGO Mānuka Honey is tested and graded by an independent laboratory to ensure authenticity in each jar.

Is all Mānuka the same?

Unfortunately no. 

 

Many companies heat or 'grow' their Mānuka Honey in hot rooms to increase the growth of MGO in the honey. This leads to an increase in MGO but it doesn't last for long and the MGO level decreases. They also blend the honey from various suppliers or regions to meet labeling standards, but this alone does not give you high quality Mānuka Honey.

 

Sustainability is important to us. The high quality Mānuka Honey you find here at Natures Buzz has not been heated or damaged to meet market demands. When harvesting and extracting the honey we use traditional methods of extraction with care not to damage the wax comb in the hive. Scraping the wax and pollen from frames takes the bees natural source of nutrients and minerals contained in the pollen and weakening the hive. 

 

Once extracted, each barrel is carefully hand selected, tested and tasted, bringing you amazing flavours full of pure, unblended goodness.
