Dr Peter Molan’s years of research identified the natural antibacterial compound in MÄnuka honey as Non-Peroxide Activity. While all honeys contain some level of Hydrogen Peroxide Activity, only MÄnuka Honey contained Non-Peroxide Activity. In 2008, Professor Thomas Henle and his team at the University of Dresden, in Germany, discovered the key natural chemical compound being Methylglyoxal (MGO).
With this new research, the active compound MGO was found naturally occurring in the nectar and pollen in the flowers of MÄnuka trees. MÄnuka is a native New Zealand tree with a short flowering period, making the placement of hives and timing of harvest crucial to harvesting MGO MÄnuka Honey.
